November Event

November 21, 2009

Museum of Flight
9404 East Marginal Way S.
Seattle, WA
206-764-5720

We had approximately 20 people at the Museum of Flight for the tours and lunch. We met at the planned time of 9:45am in order to start ahead of the “regular” visitors. Unfortunately we were not allowed inside until the official opening time of 10:00am. The good news was that it caused no delay at all for us and the weather cooperated with hardly any rain. Once we were inside the Museum identification wrist bands were quickly distributed and the tours started. Again, our thanks to Jean for volunteering so many of the passes to the Museum. The tours were split between Wayne and Larry with each group going to different areas of the Museum. Wayne’s group started in the original Boeing Headquarters Building referred to as The Red Barn. The building displays lots of Boeing history along with local aviation pioneers. There is also a very nice display reviewing the Wright Brothers and many earlier flyers. From the Red Barn Wayne took his group to the Great Gallery which contains many exhibits, from a replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer (flew at 7mph)historically moving forward to the Blackbird (flew at over 3 ½ times the speed of sound). Larry’s group started in the WWII section of the Personal Courage Wing which has numerous fighter aircraft from the War starting with the Battle of Britain and finishing with the start of jet aircraft. We met at 11:30 for lunch in the Museum Wings Café and were able to have a room to ourselves so the other visitors wouldn’t bother us (and I suppose vice-versa might apply also!). After lunch the groups were formed again with Wayne taking his group to the Personal Courage Wing and Larry leading his group to the Entry Hall and into the Great Gallery. The tours were finished around 2:00pm thus giving everyone plenty of time to see the remaining exhibits on their own (such as the Amelia Earhart exhibit). Though it was definitely something different for the Register, everyone seemed to have a good time. Wayne and Larry look forward to seeing everyone at the Museum again at some time in the future.
