South Sound Drive
September 19th Our September driving event started at the Little Creek Casino at 10:00am Sept. 19 from there we drove a couple miles down the road to Taylor Shellfish where Marco Pincho led us on a tour of the facilities. Taylor is the largest privately owned shellfish harvesting company in North America. We learned a lot about the farming and processing of oysters, clams, geoduck and mussels. A couple of brave souls sampled a raw oyster fresh out of the shell. Our stop at Taylor ended in the retail store to purchase seafood to add to our potluck lunch. Next we headed to the steamboat island area driving on some back roads we stopped at Devlin’s Designing Boat Builders boat works. Sam Devlin showed us their current 33 foot custom boat that they are building. We learned a lot about the boat building process from this boat designer in Olympia for the past 27 years. We all really enjoyed this, but Wayne Duncan got the most out of it, because he has been a Devlin Boat fan for years even building one of his models. Next we drove some back road of the steamboat island area and out and around the island itself. We ended the day with a potluck lunch at the Murray’s. We had a great time even though we were a very small group. And the weather was beautiful. In attendance were Larry Hughes, Larry Helser, Wayne and Laura Duncan, Jean McGarah, and Doug and Carey Murray. |
